Up to 100 000 participants gathered on Friday, July 13 in a massive demonstration against the visiting American head of state in London. The aim was to show a uniformly popular opposition to Trump’s visit to the country, but several groups attempted to draw attention to their particular interests.
Nuclear resistance, climate policy backers, Marxist and communist organisations protested with Palestinian groups and gender activists.
The leftwing demonstration, one of the largest in modern times, had big ambitions, but accomplished nothing.
A Jewish woman in the crowd approached a Swedish reporter, to ask a rather unusual question: “Are you a Jew?” She points to the big banner she helped to unfold, showing a red star on a white background with the letters JSG as part of the star.
She is from the Jewish Socialists Group, an international revolutionary and Marxist group for Jews and Jewish interests in European countries. “There are no others who have come yet, but we’ll be gathering here you’ll understand,” she says.
Hers is one of hundreds of different small organisations that had gathered in London, apparently to demonstrate against the US President’s presence in Britain, but actually their presence is explained by a neccessity be seen among potential members and donors.
She is disappointed when she hears that the reporter covering the demonstration is Swedish, and blames her failing eyesight. However, most people he talks to during the day are, in typical British fashion, polite and answer his questions: Who are you? Why are you here? What hope you can achieve?
The Jewish lady with the failing eyesight, does not want to give her name but says that the JSG aims to work for Jewish interests in other nations than Israel. She believes that it is the duty of the Jews to stand on the side of minorities as this will always benefit them.
To demonstrate against Trump, she believes is par for the course in the light of this.
