Sweden won’t deport child rapist ‘as he risks being raped in Afghanistan’

Two immigrants from Afghanistan were sentenced by the Stockholm Court for gang-raping a 15-year-old girl. The assault took place on September 2, this year, under the railway and motorway bridge Centralbron next to the Central train station.

To the authorities, one rapist declared that he could not stay in Afghanistan because of the tradition of Bacha Bazi, or the “Dancing Boys” who are raped by adult men. Less than year after he was granted asylum, together with his friend, they raped a 15-year-old girl in central Stockholm. The court says he cannot be deported, because he still risks being raped in Afghanistan.

Rohollah Karimi, who is thought to be 17, was sentenced to ten months in juvenile detention. The court documents state that he was granted a permanent residence permit after claiming that he was afraid of being raped in his home country Afghanistan. He described the tradition of “Dancing Boys” in detail at the time where young boys get raped and gang raped by adult men.

The prosecutor contended that Rohollah should be deported from Sweden, but the Stockholm Court decided that Rohallah should stay in the country, since the sexual threat against him in Afghanistan remains.

Rohallah’s co-rapist, Mahdi Mohammadi, 19, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. He will be expelled from Sweden after serving his sentence, but will be able to return to the country in 2028. The court documents state that he lied about his age when seeking asylum in Sweden, and when this was revealed, his application was denied. The Immigration authority maintains that he should have left Sweden a year before he committed the rape, suggesting the crime could have been prevented.

The minimum sentence for severe rape for an adult is five years in prison, but the Afghans got much lighter sentences because of their young age. They were ordered to pay 170 000 Swedish krona – which is about about 19 000 dollars – in damages to the victim. Since they have no income, the Swedish taxpayer will have to cover the cost.

The court documents provide a detailed description of the assault. The two girls, one age 15 and the other 16, were on their way home from a party. The two arrived at the Central Station, where they were supposed to change trains, but decided to go to the nearby Sergels Square to see if they could get cigarettes there.

There they encountered the three immigrants they had not met before, and the immigrants offered them cigarettes and hashish. Together they strolled to the Centralbron, under which there are many pillars and nooks. They then sat down on some stairs and smoked their cigarettes and a joint.

Threatend and raped

After a while, the two girls decided to leave, but were stopped by the immigrants, who had suddenly turned aggressive. They demanded payment for the hashish. The girls did not have any money, so the immigrants took their cell phones, jackets, commuter cards and shoes.

They told the 15-year-old girl they also wanted her bra. The distressed girl started to cry as she was busy removing her undergarment. When she noticed that Rohollah Karimi had started to film her with his phone, she stopped and put the bra back on.

The immigrants seemed aroused by the crying, anguished teenager, and focused on her. This gave the other girl a chance to run away, with one of the Afghans in pursuit. The 15-year-old girl was then left alone with Rohallah and Mahdi.

The two Afghans forced her up against a wall behind one concrete pillar. They threatened to hurt her and to throw her in the water. They forced her to perform oral sex and they took turns raping her in this way. When they had finished, they started to pull her pants off, but suddenly one of them shouted that someone was coming, and they both ran away. The girl was upset and scared, but managed to call the police, who sent out a patrol.

The police searched the area, but could not find the suspects. However two weeks later, the inspectors managed to arrest Rohollah after they checked the commuter cards used at the Central Station at that specific time and since the card was issued by Rohollah’s school, it was possible to identify him. After that, they were able to arrested Mahdi as well as their friend.

Lied about his age

Mahdi Mohammadi had applied for asylum in Sweden on December 7, 2015, and claimed that he was born in 2001, which would make him 14 years old at that time. He was placed at a children’s home for two years, before the Immigration authority performed an X-ray examination of his teeth, which showed that he was in fact already 18 years old “or more” with 90 percent degree of certainty.

A coroner pathologist confirmed the approximate age in another X-ray examination during the police investigation.

In a document presented to the court, the Immigration authorities state that Mahdi was notified after two years in Sweden that his asylum application had been rejected. “The deportation from Sweden will be performed by him travelling to Afghanistan or any country that will accept him”, the document noted.

But Mahdi simply ignored the decision and the Swedish authorities never followed up on whether he had actually left the country.

Rohollah had applied for asylum in December, 2015, as “unaccompanied minor”. He too claimed to have been born in 2001, but this time the Immigration authority did not question the claim, and he was granted a permanent residence permit on December 22, 2017. He will not be deported to Afghanistan because he is considered to be a minor and in danger of being raped there.

The 15-year-old victim is in a very bad shape after her terrible ordeal, according to witnesses. To make matters worse, her father passed away two weeks after the rape, and according to court documents, she is now afraid to even be in the city, is often absent from school and drowning her sorrow in alcohol after the terrible trauma.
