“For the first time in world history, Americans have gone so far as to openly threaten to impose sanctions on those who comply with the decisions of the UN Security Council and the IAEA Board of Governors,” the Foreign Ministry noted.

The situation with the Iranian nuclear deal is “in many ways paradoxical”. Washington created a “poisoned atmosphere” around the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA). In spite of this, Tehran is meeting its commitments, which have been laid down both under the JCPOA and the Comprehensive Guarantee Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Who is the infringer? Obviously the US, who has deliberately taken this step and continue to insist.”

Moscow stressed that Washington has not only left the nuclear deal with Iran but is no longer fulfilling its obligations under the treaty. Moreover, it has begun to “create obstacles to further fulfillment of the JCPOA for those who remain loyal to it”.

The 5 + 1 states (the UN-Veto nations and Germany) as well as Iran had reached a historic agreement in 2015 to settle the long-standing problems surrounding the Iranian nuclear programme. The parties had agreed on the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA), the fulfillment of which repealed the economic and financial sanctions of the UN Security Council, the US and the EU against Iran.

In the nuclear deal, Iran committed to allow controls on its nuclear facilities in order to dispel the suspicion that it is secretly developing nuclear weapons.

The nuclear agreement granted Iran the right to operate a civilian nuclear programme. Iran also derives the right to enrich uranium at low levels. On Saturday, Iranian parliament spokesman Ali Larijani said that this will continue despite US sanctions.

In May 2018, Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, stating that the US would reinstate any sanctions that were lifted as a result of the agreement. The other participants in the agreement, on the other hand, declared that they would continue to stand by it.
