“Some advocate that relations between states should no longer be based on cooperation, but on the confrontation of powers. We risk switching to a kind of international anarchy”, the minister said in an interview with French daily Le Parisien.
Le Drian expressed the wish that all parties comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. The United States is responsible for trying to collapse the agreement between the major powers.
Le Drian placed the blame on US President Donald Trump and added that additional forms of “hyper-violence, namely continuing terrorism” were being developed.
He also underscored how two other important phenomena contributed to international insecurity. “The main principles and foundations of international life are currently being shattered into fragments… institutions, treaties, earlier promises and boundaries are not respected”, he said.
One year after US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Tehran announced on Wednesday, that it had partially discontinued its commitments under the deal in response to US actions. On May 8 Iran issued a statement giving European powers 60 days to move ahead with arrangement to boost trade, despite US sanctions, but the EU rejected Iran’s deadline.
Russia and China have maintained good relations with Iran in the wake of the United States’ withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for Iran’s nuclear program, while other participants have failed to comply with their obligations, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said ahead of a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.
“Our friends, Russia and China, have been maintaining very good relations with us in the year since the US pulled out of the JCPOA, though perhaps the level of relations is not as high as we expected,” he said. “Other JCPOA participants chose not to fulfill any of their obligations,” Zarif added.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Wednesday had pledged to fulfill their promises “during two meetings of the foreign ministers of the European trio, Russia and China” last year.
Lavrov said Russia was committed to honoring them in full. “We expect our counterparts, primarily Europeans, who expressed their willingness to find a solution to the problem created by the Americans, to keep their promises as well.”
In Berlin, German Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Adebahr confirmed at a briefing on Friday that her country was working closely with both Moscow and Beijing. “We continue to actively exchange views with our Russian and Chinese colleagues. Not only we, but also Russia and China remain in the agreement,” she told Russian news agency TASS.
