On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, a migrant was caught traveling in a car without a license in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Understandably, the young man had no interest in the police establishing his personal details as the video from the Siegener Zeitung revealed.
In the USA, Russia or China, it would probably have turned out differently. But German police officers have been forced to avoid anything that could even remotely be interpreted as “violence against migrants”. When a criminal decides not to cooperate with the police, his chances of getting away are therefore pretty good.
German police officers are currently manning the streets without the necessary backing from politicians. If they crack down on migrants too harshly, they face the threat of dismissal from the civil service.
Clearly, arresting the resisting suspect without the use of force would not have been possible in this case. But the use of force, on the other hand, is now officially undesirable.

This is the heart of the matter. Germany’s Interior Ministry guidelines are bad enough, but state government interference with the police produces intolerable episodes such as this. The North Rhine-Wesphalia police are under heavy restrictions from the regional leftist government. Berlin, with its far-left government, is perhaps even worse. Regardless, there is a major need for improvement of police capabilities in general, that should well start by standardising public safety guidance to police by Germany’s national and regional governments. Until that happens, the German public will continue to be a victim of politicized restrictions on police activity.
Well, they got a car out of the deal anyway.
Probably a stolen one.
