Swiss reject Islam as an official religion
The recognition of Islam as an official religion in Switzerland is being rejected by a majority of Swiss citizens.

Islam is not part of the Swiss identity, citizens feel. A survey revealed that as an official religion, Islam is being rejected by a large majority of Swiss citizens.
Some 62 percent of Swiss nationals believe that Islam has no place in Switzerland, while only half of thirty-eight percent thought the opposite. For 80 percent of the population, Christian values are part of the Swiss identity.
Recognising Islam as on par with Christianity and Judaism in Switzerland is thus not likely to happen any time soon. Of the people asked, only 19 percent would approve outright of such a measure, while 20 percent said “quite in favour”.
To the question of whether it is right to place Islam at the same level as Christianity and Judaism in Switzerland, 61 percent of those polled said “No” or “Quite against”, according to a poll in Matin Dimanche and the SonntagsZeitung.
The President of the Socialist Party Christian Levrat called for substantive debate in August on the place of Islam in Switzerland. “We have to think if we want to recognize Islam as an official religion,” he said.
That would avoid allowing “the formation and financing of imams to foreign donors, even fundamentalists,” he explained to 20min.ch.
The survey was conducted online based on 15 617 responses weighted by demography, geography and politics.
