Germany’s first ice cream parlor to sell insect ice cream

The recent approval of insects as food in the EU primarily caused disgust among the citizens, But there are nevertheless entrepreneurs in Germany who are trying their luck with crickets and the like in their products.

    An ice cream parlor in Baden-Württemberg now offers “Barbecue Ice Cream”. In addition to the flour from house crickets used, dried insects are used as a topping, but their taste and texture then has to be masked with extracts of wild honey, vanilla and cookies.

    High in cholesterol and dangerous viruses

    A new EU regulation recently allowed more insects to be used in food, despite being extremely high in cholesterol, and posing a risk of ingesting dangerous viruses. For example, flour from cricket farms contains 545,67 mg cholesterol in 100 g which is on par with egg consumption.

    Despite this, the owner of an ice cream parlor in Baden-Württemberg has come up with a bad idea: He has recently been offering a “barbecue” version in his ice cream parlour.

    The ice cream parlor in Rottenburg in the district of Tübingen is known for unusual ice cream creations. Ice cream with gorgonzola or liver sausage and even real gold leaf has already been offered there.

    The latest creation is ice cream with cricket flour and a topping of dried brown insects. The ice cream parlor owner claims to have experimented with the cricket flour for months.

    He uses very finely ground flour for his mislabeled creation. The taste of the crickets is then toned down with extracts of wild honey, vanilla and cookies, according to reports.

    A tolerance limit has finally been reached with the insect agenda

    The reactions of the customers are obviously very different – many are disgusted, others are curious. Whether insect ice has a future remains to be seen however.

    It is already quite telling that the ice cream parlour owner had not dared label his product correctly.

    In the course of the media hype created by mainstream media around the “edible insects”, numerous bakeries felt compelled to assure their customers that no insects were used in their products. For this they received a lot of encouragement – ​​more than ten thousand likes are not uncommon among such contributions in social networks.
