One in three people shot in Baltimore dies, The Baltimore Sun found, making it one of the most lethal of all America’s largest cities. More than 16 percent of the victims were killed in incidents where at least one other person was also killed or injured, according to an analysis by the city’s largest newspaper. Nonfatal shootings in which more than one victim was injured were also commonplace.

In 2016 there were 762 murders in the city of Chicago compared to only 318 in Baltimore, but the two cities do not have the same population sizes. If indeed Baltimore had the same population as Chicago it would have a murder count of 1 390, close to double the murder count in Chicago.

The total of 318 killings by year’s end made 2016 the second-deadliest year per capita on record, second only to 2015. A Police spokesman TJ Smith said a large percentage of the year’s murders involved shots to the head, indicating targeted attacks.

Often in broad daylight, one out of every 2 000 residents was killed in 2016, mostly young black men. And worse still, most of the people responsible for the killings in 2016 haven’t been caught. The department’s clearance rate for the year was below 40 percent, which is also below the US average.

President Trump has already voiced his concern over deadly violence in black cities like Chigaco. During his address to Congressional Republicans, Trump wanted to know “what the hell is going in Chicago?” The city, former president Obama’s adopted home town struggles with horrifying levels of violence in black neighborhoods, and it shows no signs of decreasing.

Trump promised solutions to tackle the scourge in black cities controlled by Democratic party leadership: “At the center of my revitalisation plan is the issue of trade. Massive, chronic trade deficits have emptied out our jobs. Just look at what has happened to Baltimore, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland.”

He blamed the Democrats for high murder rates: “Democratic policies have given rise to crippling crime and violence,” after a TV news program 60 Minutes aired a segment titled “Crisis in Chicago,” calling conditions there like a “war zone”.
