The number of Coronavirus deaths in the US rose by almost 2 000 in 24 hours to reach 40 661 on Sunday, higher than the 1 891 which Johns Hopkins data showed a day earlier, from Saturday.
On the same day that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo claimed the epidemic in his hardest-hit state was “past the high point”. New York is the current epicenter of the outbreak in the US with over 500 deaths a day, a world record.
From this week onwards New Yorkers are required to carry facial coverings whenever they leave their homes and to wear masks when social distancing is not possible.
President Donald Trump said at a press conference that his administration would be implementing the Defense Production Act to increase swab production because of the Coronavirus testing shortage.
The president’s announcement comes after governors demanded federal help to ramp up testing across the country, CNBC reported.
A new policy at New York City’s public hospitals requires medical workers who call in sick to produce a doctor’s note.
“We know that people just need a mental health day,” Sean Petty, a registered nurse at a public hospital told Democracy Now. “Thousands of us have been exposed. Health workers are the least tested group of people in this city.” Petty is a member of the board of directors of the New York State Nurses Association.
