A 24-year-old Afghan admitted to having defrauded thirty women by registering on various dating sites, taking advantage of dating to steal their bank cards, the Bas-Rhin departmental public security directorate (DDSP) said on Tuesday.
La Provence, regional French daily, reported that the suspect, also wanted in Canada, had already been imprisoned in Bordeaux for similar facts, but he escaped in July 2019 before being arrested again and placed in pre-trial detention in August in Strasbourg. He is also suspected of raping one of his victims.
The migrant had already admitted to having defrauded 27 women throughout France. On Monday he admitted to having defrauded three others during “a new interrogation conducted by the Financial and Administrative Investigations Unit (UEFEA) of the Departmental Security of Bas-Rhin”.
He had already acknowledged in March “all of the facts” which he had been accused of concerning the first 27 victims.
“During the meeting, he took the opportunity to skillfully steal the bank card of his prey, or simply bank details, and used it later to make online payments,” said the police.
