Migrants breach Polish border
The first illegal migrants broke through the border fence between Poland and Belarus and reached Poland. On Saturday evening, around 50 illegals entered the Starzyna area by force, reported the Polish news website wpolityce.pl.

Border agents arrested 22 Iraqis. The police also arrested four suspected smugglers in the border region. These are two Georgians, a Pole and a Syrian. According to the Polish border guards, there were a total of 223 attempts to illegally cross the border on Saturday.
The situation at the border is getting worse. Poland is now using loudspeaker announcements to prevent migrants from further attacks on the border: “The Polish border will remain closed and will be protected. Nobody is allowed to go through without the required documents. You were deceived by Belarus. You can request reimbursement and return home from Belarus.”
On the night of November 12, according to the Polish authorities, Belarusian soldiers began to destroy a temporary border barrier in the area of Wólka Terechowska. The Polish armed forces were blinded by laser beams and strobe lights. Around 100 migrants tried to cross the border. The Belarusians equipped the migrants with tear gas to lob in the direction of Polish soldiers.
A Polish soldier was shot and killed serving on the border with Belarus. The incident was an accident, according to the military. The Polish police also found the body of a young Syrian in a forest. As the police announced on Saturday, the dead man was discovered the day before near the village of Wólka Terechowska. The exact cause of death is still unclear, it said.
According to the Polish border guards, there have been 33 000 attempts to cross the border illegally since the beginning of the year, 17 000 of them in October alone.

It’s certainly going to get uglier. The Belarus authorities are going to continue to do whatever they can to force illegals over the Polish border. Perhaps harsh, long-term imprisonment and deportation should await them on the Polish side, as a deterrent to those who might hope to get through Polish border defenses. But perhaps the strongest deterrent the Poles can provide is to keep the illegals out wherever and whenever they can. This incident will doubtless lead to revised Polish ROEs and likely reinforcement of the border by regular Polish military forces. That might ensure less chance of a repeat of the incident described here, but might also increase the chance of violence with the Belarus forces.
