Salvini calls for Roma census as top Vatican official heads for Bilderberg
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Monday announced the intention of holding a special census of Roma people in Italy with the intention of closing all illegal Roma camps in the country.

“I’m having them prepare a dossier on the Roma question in Italy at the ministry because after (former Minister Roberto) Maroni, nothing has been done and it’s chaos,” Salvini who is also deputy premier in the new Italian government and leader of the League party, told TeleLombardia. “[There will be] reconnaissance on the Roma people in Italy to see who, how, how many, re-doing what was called the census.
The minister said that Roma people who do not have the legal right to be in Italy will be deported, adding that “unfortunately, you have to keep the Italian Roma at home”.
A Roma Nation Association statement noted that the authorities had carried out a count of the community last year and called for a meeting with Salvini at the earliest opportunity. “We also recall that Italian Roma have been present in our country for at least half a century and sometimes they are ‘more Italian’ than many of our fellow citizens,” said Carlo Stasolla, president of the Associazione 21 Luglio. “Besides data and figures about who lives in the formal and informal settlements already exist and the few undocumented Roma are effectively stateless, and therefore cannot be expelled.
Stasolla said Salvini’s plan was illegal. “The interior minister does not seem to know that a census on the basis of ethnicity is not permitted by the law.”
But Salvini is determined to start monitoring Roma camps across Italy, including the illegal ones, as well as to “protect … thousands of [Roma] children, who are not allowed to attend school regularly because their kinfolk prefer to involve them in delinquency”.
“We also want to control how the millions of euro that come from European funds [to help Roma in Italy] are spent,” he said.
Leftist politicians called Salvini’s proposal “abhorrent” and denounced it as an escalation of “dangerous, unacceptable messages” and likened him to the new Mussolini who wants to turn the Roma areas into “concentration camps” la Reppublica reported. Kenneth Roth, the CEO of Human Rights Watch, called Salvini’s proposal “outrageous racism”.

Ex-premier Paolo Gentiloni expressed his anger on Twitter: “Yesterday the refugees, today the Roma, tomorrow guns for all,” while Matteo Orfini, president of the leftist Democratic party, tweeted that “if we really want to have a census, I’d start with racists and fascists”.
Noemi Di Segni, the president of Italy’s union of Jewish communities, also joined the chorus and said Salvini’s proposal recalled “Fascist racial laws”.
The Interior Minister responded to the insults on Facebook. “If the left proposes it, then it is all right, but if I propose it, then it is RACISM. I’m not giving up, I’m going straight on! The Italians and their security come first”.
Salvini also said Monday that he will meet Pope Francis soon. “I’ll probably have the honour of meeting him this week,” said Salvini, “It’s a reason for joy”, he said, but the Pope has repeatedly called for migrants to be welcomed in Europe, a message that was again reiterated on June 14 at the Holy See-Mexico Conference on International Migration at the Casina Pio IV, a villa located in the Vatican Gardens.
In fact, the most senior Vatican official after Pope Francis, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, has been invited to the secretive Bilderberg meeting this year to discuss migration. One of the key topics for discussion at the 66th Meeting also includes “populism in Europe”.
Bilderberg meetings are held under the Chatham House Rule, which states that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of any participant may be revealed.
The participation in the meeting has not been officially announced by the Vatican, though sources within the Secretariat of State have confirmed that he is scheduled to take part in the meeting. It will be the first time a high-ranking Vatican official will take part.

“The pope rightly speaks to the soul, he speaks of the supreme good of everyone,” Salvini remarked on his coming visit to the Pope. “Those of us who are smaller guarantee rights to refugees, but we say there isn’t room for those who aren’t escaping war”.
Salvini said at the weekend that “we are no longer the doormats of Europe” on migrants after the Aquarius case and that Spain should take in “another 66 000” migrants. “Finally the Germans, the French, the Belgians, the Dutch and even the Spanish are listening to us,” said Salvini.
Italian journalist Luca Donadel pointed out to Infowars Europe that the migrant crisis on the Mediterranean was manufactured by those on the left who benefit from it. He said leftists have wasted 5 billion euros of Italian taxpayer money to fund the business of asylum.
European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said on Tuesday that he considered Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s tough stance on migrants to be mistaken while warning member states that Italy should not be left to cope with the problem on its own.
Meanwhile, after a long wait in waters off Malta, the Italian Coast Guard ship Diciotti is heading to the Sicilian port of Pozzallo with 519 asylum seekers on board.
The Diciotti, which is expected to dock late on Tuesday, is carrying a dead body, Italian news agency ANSA reported.
