The protesters gathered at the base of Silent Sam, a Confederate memorial statue, covering the statue in gray banners to turn it into an “alternative monument”.
Protesters hid under the gray covering, working to destroy the base of the statue. It fell down with a loud crash, and anti-white protesters erupted in cheers.
After Silent Sam had fallen, the protesters stomped on the 105-year-old monument which was erected with donations from the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Previously, UNC had installed surveillance cameras around the statue last year in a bid to stop the vandalism, but students cheered its destruction.
Andrew Skinner, 23, said he was glad the statue fell, even though it was done illegally. He accused the university of “putting racism on a pedestal,” the News Observer reported.
The Monday protest was organised in support of a student who threw red ink and blood on the Confederate statue in April – leading to criminal court charges.
Several bystanders wearing clothing emblazoned with Confederate flags watched the protesters being chased down by police after they hurled smoke bombs at law enforcement.
A Trump supporter present at the incident said he wanted to see for himself how intolerant those protesting Silent Sam were, and the experience did not disappoint. He said he was shoved by protesters and his hat was stolen.

“The main reason for me to come was to see the people fighting against Trump,” he told News Observer. He described some of the protesters’ language as hateful against police and conservatives.
National efforts to rid the country of Confederate monuments like Silent Sam began around three years ago. Since then, over 110 Confederate symbols have been removed across the country, while over 1 700 remain according to the SPLC.
The statue was erected in 1913 after being commissioned to honour the young men who quit their studies to march off to fight in the Civil War. More than one thousand students fought in the war in either the Northern or Southern armies, comprising at least 40 percent of the student body.
In a national survey in 2015 across all races, 57 percent of Americans had the opinion that the Confederate flag represented Southern pride symbol rather than racism. A similar poll in 2000 had a nearly identical result of 59 percent.
