Merkel meets Russia’s army chief
Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Russia's army chief of staff Valery Gerasimov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine on Tuesday in Berlin.
BerlinThe unusual meeting was arranged by Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week before the Russian leader left for South Africa to attend the 10th BRICS summit.
“The focus of the talks was the situation in the Near East, in particular in Syria. The conflict in eastern Ukraine was also discussed,” a German government spokesperson told AFP.
The discussions will focus on “tasks related to the preparation of conditions for the return of refugees and the advancement of the political process,” according to Moscow and include “ongoing work within the ‘Normandy format’ to fulfil the Minsk agreements”.
The Kremlin is hoping for Washington’s cooperation on the safe return of refugees to Syria after Putin met with US President Donald Trump in Helsinki where the two leaders also discussed the fate of Ukraine.
