In an unprovoked attack, a 26-year-old Somali entered into the rooms and stabbed the doctor to death in front of his young daughter.
The migrant also attacked and wounded a medical assistant before fleeing the scene, leaving his weapon behind.
The attacker, caught after a manhunt, was identified as an asylum seeker who arrived in Germany in 2015 and was granted a residence permit to live in Offenberg.
Johanna Skopp, a neighbour, told German tabloid Bild how she heard “pleading” from the rooms with the little girl calling out, “Dad, Dad!” repeatedly.
The small German town lies directly across the Rhine from the French city of Strasbourg, and has become a “crime hotspot” according public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Stefan Räpple, an Alternative for Germany MP, said the seriousness of the attack means that it can no longer be “business as usual”. He blasted the “failed migration policy” of Angela Merkel’s coalition government, saying they carry “direct blame” for the murder.
“The policy of open borders does not help people in Africa, rather it will just result in African conditions manifesting here in Offenburg,” he wrote on Facebook.
Offenberg Mayor Edith Schreiner — a member of Merkel’s party — said residents should “behave in a calm manner and refrain from generalisations” because AfD supporters had organised a demonstration at Offenburg’s town hall.
