Of the 7 079 rendition requests, the government in Athens only guaranteed decent housing and a fair asylum procedure in 183 cases, which is a prerequisite for the rendition.
Thus, 97 percent of all requests failed because of Athens’ refusal, as evidenced by a response from the federal government to a request from the left-wing faction. The grounds for refusal include “lack of accommodation in Greece and lack of proof of actual entry into Greece with a Greek visa or travel route and residence since leaving Greece”.
German daily Die Welt reported that in the end, in 2018, there were only six of the 183 asylum seekers who were actually transferred to Greece. As reasons for this, the government noted that those affected have sued or had scuppered their own deportations.
Measured against all transfer request, only in 0,1 percent of cases, the deportation succeeded. From 2011 to 2017 Germany had completely renounced deportations to the EU country. The Federal Government cited human rights concerns as a justification.
In total, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees had made 54 910 attempts to transfer migrants within the Dublin system last year. In 37 738 cases, the countries concerned agreed.
However, the deportation only succeeded in 9 209 cases. Most of the applications were submitted to the Italian Government (17 286). Of those, Italy agreed 16 116. In the end, only 2 848 people were transferred. The reason for this was primarily the complaints of those affected against their deportation.
Since 2015, every second deportation has failed. Since then, almost 188 000 repatriations had been planned, around half of which had to be canceled or delayed.
