Last Sunday riots broke out at when Pegida supporters gathered at the Al Fourqaan mosque in the district of Woensel.
Hundreds of counter-demonstrators were throwing glass, stones, eggs and other objects to the Pegida-campaigners and the police, according to the source www.studio040.nl.
The mobile command had to intervene to ensure the safety of Pegida supporters. Because the police could not guarantee security, they called off the protest outside a mosque in Eindhoven after four officers were injured.
Tension flared outside the mosque in Otterstraat after a counter-demonstration of men carrying Turkish flags arrived to challenge the Pegida supporters.
Even though riot police on horseback managed to push back the Turkish crowd, they broke up the original protest for fear of a further escalation.
Seven people aged between 14 and 32 were arrested on suspicion of using violence against police. Three underage boys were sent home on Sunday evening after being interviewed by law enforcement. In total, there were ten people arrested after last Sunday’s riots.
On the basis of the criminal investigation, more arrests have not been excluded, the police have. Among other things, they have secured camera images. Police sources said they were still collecting video footage of the incident.
Pegida already announced that they will repeat the demonstration of last Sunday. On social media, organiser Edwin Wagensveld said his organisation was already signed up for the new gathering if the Municipality agrees to the request.
But after the clashes, it is not yet clear if the demonstration will go ahead since residents around the mosque have announced that they are against further demonstrations.
Those arrested come from Eindhoven, Geldrop and Belgium. At least seven suspects will be heard on Monday by the public prosecutor.
The Mobile Unit (ME) was forced to end the Pegida demonstration at a mosque on Otterstraat in Eindhoven on Sunday.
The ME had carried out several charges to put an end to the violence. The deputy mayor then decided after consultation with other stakeholders to allow the police to stop the demonstration and evacuate the Pegida supporters.
