A 28-year-old Syrian, who arrived in Germany in 2015 and is known to the police, was arrested.
The latest ultra-violent attack shocked Germany on July 31 when an individual armed with a sword-like weapon brutally murdered another man in a neighbourhood south of the city.
Dozens of witnesses saw the murder, many of whom filmed the scene which a police spokesman described as “unusual and appalling”.
Witnesses filmed the viscious stabbing which took place in the Fasanenhof area of Stuttgart, a residential district in the city, and uploaded the footage on the web. But authorities are now investigating the use and reproduction of the videos, as doing so is prohibited by German law.
The facts occurred late afternoon, according to the German tabloid Bild. The police received the first emergency calls at around 18:40. On the road, in front of many witnesses who stopped their vehicles, an individual, “brandishing a sword weapon”, slashed a 36-year-old man several times.
While he was lying inanimate on the road, as evidenced by several videos, his killer continued to attack him.
At least two witnesses of the scene, including a woman, tried in vain to intervene before retreating in the face of the threatening attitude of the assailant. He then fled on a bike, according to RTL. The same source said the two men knew each other and lived as roommates. The victim had moved shortly before.
Helpers who had arrived on the spot, could not save the victim’s life, however. The police also launched a vast operation to find the fugitive, including mobilizing a helicopter. Investigators finally arrested a 28-year-old man. The suspect, according to police and prosecutor, is a Syrian citizen who arrived in Germany in 2015. He was known to the police.
