Police were surrounded by Muslim residents of the immigrant-populated district of Borny who accused them of having shot the individual armed with a knife.

On Sunday, January 5 in the district of Borny, in Metz, police stopped the radicalized individual who tried to attack them with a knife by shooting him in the thigh. An amateur video then filmed the police officers on the scene, surrounded by a group of visibly angry Muslim men who seemed to be reproaching them for having injured the assailant.

“You are the murderers!” one individual in the mob shouts at the officers. “You shot him,” he also repeatedly screams, while accusing the officials of being responsible for the attacker’s injuries.

“It’s because of you,” he yells several times. Likewise, several witnesses denounced a “police overreaction”.

In any case, the incident after the shooting intrigued National Rally MEP Nicolas Bay: “In Metz, scum accuse the police of having shot the Islamist who attacked them! Sordid expression of a solidarity forged on the hatred of France,” he noted on Twitter.

The Socialist Mayor of Metz Dominique Gros, meanwhile, preferred to minimize the situation, citing “some vis-a-vis reactions of the security forces” according to the website actu.fr. He had already denounced “a tendency to want to use an incident that is largely a matter of psychiatry”.

However, this violence against the police continued overnight. After the intervention of the police, tensions broke out near the places where the events took place.

Actu.fr reported in particular that molotov cocktails were launched at police officers deployed in the city. Garbage cans were also burned near some homes and even on bus tracks. Three cars were also burned and bus shelters were damaged.
