German police chief lists failures of immigration policy
The President of the Federal Police Headquarters, Dieter Romann, sharply criticized European asylum and migration policy at the European Police Congress in Berlin.
Berlin“I have to say that the external borders are currently not secure,” said Romann, according to a report from German daily Die Welt.
Germany was “the main destination for unauthorized entry for the eighth year in a row”. Almost every year, more asylum applications are made in the Federal Republic than “the EU or Schengen registers illegal border crossings”. The protection rate of asylum seekers, however, is around 30 percent.
Romann also complained that the Dublin procedure did not work. “In 2018, Germany had 184 000 asylum applications, but only 9 200 Dublin transfers to other member states.” The procedure involves sending asylum seekers back to the EU country in which they first applied for asylum. Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) had previously complained about the system: “We don’t even get an answer to our letters from most countries.”
The chief of police called for “the introduction of mandatory border or transit procedures in the external border states”. The chance of a right to stay should also be examined individually. Hopeless and unfounded asylum applications should be “immediately rejected”. This practice could better protect the EU from threats, he added.
