The third worst-hit state is California, which has 131 000 confirmed cases and 4 650 dead. It is also the state that sees the largest daily increase, with between 2 500 and 3 000 new cases every day.

It has been previously reported that the infection can cause loss of taste and smell, and that it was one of the symptoms. However, a new study shows that this loss can persist after the other symptoms have disappeared, and even remain permanent.
The study was published in the European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, and was based on 417 patients with mild to average Covid-19 infection. At least 88 of the respondents reported a reduced sense of taste, while 86 percent reported a reduced sense of smell. Most notably, most reported that they could not smell or taste even after the other symptoms had disappeared.
In addition to the concern of no longer being able to tell certain smells or tastes, many patients worry about the risks associated with, for example, not being able to smell the smoke of a fire.
