South Africa: White farmers stop land grab attempt in Kroondal
On Friday and Saturday, around 500 land occupiers besieged the small town of Kroondal in the Rustenburg area. White farmers and community groups had to react quickly to try and end the occupation. No system media reported on the land grab.
KroondalIn an exclusive interview, Dr Dan Roodt spoke to a community leader present on the ground during the day where tensions were high amid fake reports that “blood had been found in the veld” suggesting that the black land occupiers had been shot by white farmers. It turned out to be a hoax.
Some hundred farmers were called in to stop the occupation. The South African Police (SAPS) only arrived at the scene after the farmers had surrounded the occupiers who had tried to set fire to the bush. But because there was no wind, the fire did not spread. SAPS eventually fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that had been bussed by black political parties.
Kroondal was established as Lutheran mission station 1858 and later became one of 22 Lutheran stations where workers were expected to take care of themselves. The farm was therefore surveyed in 1889 and divided into smallholdings for independent farmers. This explains the large German community still present in Kroondal today.
