Faced with a major resurgence of Covid-19, and in particular of several very contagious variants, Germany continues to tighten its health measures. To the chagrin of the European Union, Berlin decided on Sunday February 14 to close some borders.
Berlin“Even if the virus variants are already circulating in Germany, it is necessary to prevent any further intrusion as best as possible,” explained the Minister of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg. Faced with a major “third wave” of Covid-19, Germany thus decided, on Sunday, February 14, to close its borders with the Czech Republic and Austrian Tyrol. The two countries concerned, showed variants of the virus circulating, according to French daily Le Monde. They are in fact considered particularly risky by the German authorities.
Among the panel of measures announced, Germany in particular decided to close rail traffic, and called for the establishment of “fixed control points” on the borders concerned. And the least that can be said is that these sovereign measures greatly displeased the European Union, which deplored a return to “Europe with closed borders as in March 2020”.
Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health, declared “that the virus will not be stopped by closed borders”. It was a barely veiled criticism that the European Commissioner used as an injunction to follow European directives: “The only thing that helps are vaccines and health precautionary measures,” she asserted.
The Germans did not appreciate her comments at all, despite being great fans of the “European project”. Thus, reported Le Monde, the Federal Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer, sharply criticized the European Union which has already “made enough mistakes” and “should support us rather than hamper us with its advice”.
