It was at a conference with the Committee for Multiethnic Affairs in Astrakhan that Putin commented on how Europe is handling its escalating ethnic tensions.
“It doesn’t fit into my head what on earth they are thinking over there,” Putin said.
The Russian president referred to a recent case where an Iraqi asylum seeker was acquitted of rape charges against a 10-year-old boy by Austria’s Supreme Court on October 20. The court only upheld a lesser conviction for aggravated sexual assault, striking down the previous sentence of six years minimum for rape. Because of language difficulties, the court ruled, it had not been proven that the 20-year-old Iraqi had realized the boy did not want to be raped.
“This is the result of the dilution of national values,” Putin went on. “I can’t even understand the rationale. Is it a sense of guilt before the migrants?”
“But a society that cannot defend its children today has no tomorrow. It has no future. So relying on their migration policy experience is not the best thing to do, if I can be frank.”
