Greta Thunberg mural uses thousands of litres of noxious aerosol paint

Controversy has been following climate activist Greta Thunberg to San Francisco too. The American city is struggling with environmental issues, not the least of which is a human feces crisis on the streets currently plaguing inhabitants and terrible air quality.

San Fransisco, part of the “Bay Area” in the US, is already one of the cities with the worst air quality. In 2018, the lung association’s State of the Air report showed the Bay Area ranked sixth in the list of most-polluted metropolitan areas for short-term particle pollution and 10th in most-polluted cities for year-round particle pollution.

But the hypocrisy of climate change activists knows no bounds: A massive mural of the world’s latest climate activist has been erected on the side of a building in the progressive far-left city using paint that scientists say can generate asthma-inducing smog.

Andres “Cobre” Petreselli, an internationally renowned artist, depicted the Swedish activist in Union Square, using a fair amount of aerosol paint cans – 700 of them, according to Brandon Straka.

Petreselli’s image shows Thunberg staring down at the city – an angry, stern four-storey face. “What I want from people is to realize have to do something for the world,” Cobre said. “Otherwise, it’s going to be the beginning of our extinction,” he told San Fransisco CBS Local.

To create the mural of Greta, the artist used a respirator that is said to protect painters subjected to noxious fumes.

According to Scientific American, although most aerosol products sold in the US now use propellants, such as compressed gasses and hydrocarbons that “do not deplete the ozone layer,” the use of spray cans like the one being used in the Greta Thunberg mural remain harmful to the environment.

Aerosol paint cans contain hydrocarbons and/or compressed gases that contribute to global warming. In an article in World Atlas the cans themselves are said to contribute to pollution and climate change.

The modern CFC-free aerosols still emit the volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which still affect the ozone and the environment. The VOCs are the primary component of the asthma-inducing smog. Besides, the propellants in aerosol cans are highly flammable when in contact with fire and can cause explosions and start fires. Empty aerosol cans are considered as hazardous waste in the US.

This is certainly not in tune with Thunberg famous denouncements at the United Nations Climate Summit in September: “We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth — how dare you!” Adding, “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.” Some empty words indeed.

While asthma sufferers in San Francisco will have to reach for their inhalers, they may equally be committing a climate “crime”. A successful international treaty, the Montreal Protocol, has led to the phase-out of some medical inhalers for… asthma. But CFCs were replaced with “HFCs” — hydrofluorocarbons — which are safe for the ozone layer, but which are potent global warming gases. HFCs are better known in their role as refrigerant gases in air conditioners and refrigerators.

In an ironic twist, recent amendment to the Montreal Protocol has now planned a phase-out of HFCs, stating that prudent management of these gases could make a big difference to climate change.

The one most often found in asthma metered dose inhalers, norflurane, is 1 430 times more potent than the best-known warming culprit, carbon dioxide. Another, apaflurane, is 3 220 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Thunberg will soon be heading back across the Atlantic back to Europe from Virginia to Spain on the yacht La Vagabonde, an Outremer 45 Catamaran.

Greta’s return trip will be on a sailing boat made of fiberglass, or fiber-reinforced plastic, relying on the auxiliary power from twin Volvo diesel engines. Petrochemicals are in fact sprayed into molds to construct boats like La Vagabonde.

In September, Bernard Chenebault was fired from his position as president of Friends of the Palais de Tokyo, a patrons group dedicated to supporting Europe’s largest contemporary art center in Paris, France.

Chenebault posted shocking comments on social media against the Swedish activist, calling the 16-year-old a “madwoman” and said he hoped that a mentally unstable person might shoot her.

Emma Lavigne, the recently appointed president of the Palais de Tokyo, moved swiftly to dismiss the patron.
