Race is not a social construct: European Commission to use racial categories to fight discrimination
The European Commission presented its new action plan for integration and inclusion for the next six years on Tuesday 24 November. The institution used the opportunity to plead once again in favor of the use of ethnic statistics.

“To monitor the effectiveness of long-term policies, accurate and comparable data on the extent and nature of discrimination suffered by migrants is important. The European Fundamental Rights Agency will play a key role in this regard with an upcoming EU survey of immigrants and their descendants in 2022. This also means disaggregating the data by ethnic or racial origin, as proposed in the recent EU action plan against racism,” the European Commission stated.
The use of ethnic statistics has already been supported by the European executive in the past, most recently in the action plan against racism presented in September 2020.
“Inclusion is the embodiment of the European way of life. Integration and inclusion policies are vital for newcomers and local communities, and contribute to the cohesion of societies and the strength of economies,” the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margarítis Schinás said.
