BAMF data highlights German open border policy

German authorities are increasingly reaching their limits. The failure of the state also affects essential areas. The latest disclosure comes from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). It has drastically reduced the review procedures for “refugees”.

While the BAMF allowed more than around 169 000 asylum review cases last year, the number has plummeted this year. By April, only 17 000 cases could be completed.

The authority officially blames the slump on “pandemic-related restrictions in the processing of asylum procedures”, which should be processed as a priority. The reviews of asylum extensions have therefore currently been “postponed”.

But this claim probably does not get to the heart of the problem. Authorities have learned that the BAMF has in fact drastically scaled back the procedures because the government is already implementing a change in asylum law. The traffic-light coalition plans to only check the need for protection on an “as-needed” basis.

Even in the past, the review procedure often had the character of an alibi: Only a fraction of the procedures were decided at the expense of the “refugees”. In 2021 it was 3,9 percent, in the first few months of this year 6,9 percent. According to the migration authorities, the higher rate this year is due to the fact that the screening has already largely been discontinued. The BAMF now only intervenes when it receives information from the authorities that question the holder’s protection title.
