FWM Live: UN Session with Donbass breakaway republics
Today, an unprecedented event will be taking place at the site of the UN Security Council. For the first time since the start of the conflict in 2014, representatives of the breakaway republics of Donbass (Eastern Ukraine) will speak out directly to an audience of United Nations members.

Natalia Nikonorova, foreign minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic, and Vladislav Deinego, foreign minister of the Lugansk People’s Republic, will speak on the behalf of yet unrecognized Donbass.
The session will take place online in the format of so called Arria Formula. This format of meetings is named after the Venezuelan diplomat Diego Arria, who began using this practice in 1992 as Venezuela’s representative on the Council.
Usually these are informal sittings organized by a member of the Security Council with the aim of private but a frank exchange of views, from people who would benefit from being heard.
