German Scrabble introduces non-binary tile
The game manufacturer Mattel will also offer a gender tile (*in) for the board game. “With the gender tile in Scrabble, we have the opportunity to provide the impetus for gender-appropriate language. It is a visible sign that the rules of the game have changed in society,” the company said.

Thanks to the “innovation”, gendering “can be easily learned in a playful way and transferred into everyday language use,” the company emphasized. The use of the gender tile in the game is rewarded with ten points.
The game instructions for Scrabble will also be changed from autumn.
Criticism came from the German language association: “Mattel has decided to curry favor with the small but loud minority of gender fans. That’s why there are now points for wrong language – analogous to universities, which punish correct language with a point deduction.”
According to surveys, a large majority of Germans reject gendering.
