Martinique: Anti-vaxx protesters shoot at police
During protests on the Caribbean island of Martinique, violent riots broke out after compulsory vaccination was introduced for certain professional groups.

According to RT, 17 unions on the Caribbean island of Martinique called for a general strike on November 22. This, among other things, was in response to the introduction of the compulsory Corona vaccination for employees in the healthcare sector.
Previously there had been protests against the Corona restrictions on the nearby island of Guadeloupe, with a weapons depot being looted. Both islands are politically part of France’s overseas territory and an integrated part of the French state and thus part of the European Union.
Sebastien Lecornu, the Minister for Overseas, has already held crisis talks on the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe, in an effort to defuse tensions amid unrest stemming from the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also announced that France would be willing to discuss autonomy for Guadeloupe. On his visit to Martinique at the end of last month, he saluted the “gradual” return to calm” but as soon as he departed, the island erupted.
At the end of the first day of the demonstration in Martinique, the strikers had not been received by the governor, whereupon tensions flared. Roadblocks were set up and vehicles were set on fire. The police and fire brigade were also shot at. There were no injuries.
The prefect has meanwhile issued a curfew extension: “In order to limit the risk of disturbing public order during the night and reduce the risks to people and property, the ban on movement between 7 pm and 5 m throughout the territory of Martinique is extended until Wednesday, December 8, 2021.”
As RT reported on December 1, France is sending armed police reinforcements to Martinique. As a result of the unrest, France had postponed the compulsory vaccination for the time being.
