Finland’s first trans figure skater ‘performs’ at the European Championship
Markku-Pekka Antikainen, a 59-year-old male Finnish farmer who took up figure skating at age 50 declaring himself to be "trans", performed under the female name "Minna-Maaria" at the opening ceremony of the ISU European Figure Skating Championships.

Finland was proud to announce the participation of the world’s “first trans figure skater” at the competition. Sadly, Markku, who cannot skate, made a total mockery of the event.
Despite this, Executive Director of the Finnish Figure Skating Association Outi Wuorenheimo praised the trans skater: “Figure skating is a very conservative sport with various strict rules. In international competitions, same-sex skating pairs are not allowed, and there is no category for non-binary skaters. I hope that every country will start working for equality and diversity in the field.”
Warnings that the trans “athlete” may not be qualified to take part in the championship were curiously ignored. Markku has competed before with a similar lack of self-awareness and was rewarded with a second place score.
